Are you interested in learning what it takes to become a public speaker? On the other hand, would you just like to learn how to communicate better with your family and friends when you talk to them? Either way you must learn what is appropriate and what is not appropriate when it comes to speaking.
We all want to make sure that we are not only getting the target audience to listen to us, but we also want to make sure that what we are saying is getting through.
Here is how to grab the attention of most anyone you are speaking to, regardless if you are speaking to an audience of people or just on a one to one basis: Just be honest!
Nothing is more important to ethical speaking than honesty. Being straight-forward is vital. When it comes to speaking with people there is an unspoken assumption that your words are to be trusted and that you are being truthful.
Although this indeed is an assumption, it is one of the few assumptions that is necessary. Without it there is no basis for communication, no reason for one person to believe what another person is saying. And once that bond between speaker and listener is broken, it can never be mended.
On the other hand, please keep in mind that there are certain situations where speaking the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, is impossible or inadvisable. In any case where “laying it all out” would be tactless or imprudent then some adjustments of the speech will have to be made.
For example, consider a presidential press secretary who denies the facts about war plans or war movements due to national security. Or how about when a father is giving her young daughter an explanation of why exactly her mommy and him are not together anymore. Very few people would find this kind of “non-truth telling” unethical. It just can't be helped.
Of course deciding on what not to say out of care can only be decided by you and with having carefully assessed the situation about the “speech” that you are about to give to an individual or a group. Do not create a lie to hurt anyone. Do not create a lie to hide from your wrongdoings. Rather, use your best judgment call so as not to hurt others when speaking.
